While online dating has only just taken off, singles have always gathered to mingle... Playing the field... er... court, might have even upped their chances of scoring (an awesome partner, of course).
I was newly singly, fresh out of a horrible relationship that ended just as awfully as awful relationships end and I did what I absolutely hate to admit here... I jumped right back into the dating scene. Well let's back that up... I tried to enter the dating scene... specifically the online scene. I had had no luck in real life so... virtual world had to be more fruitful. At the time there was a large, well known site that promised the best match rate, the highest selection of singles, the most authentic connections, yada, yada, yada. Nothing to lose... (I had not yet considered dignity as a possibility).
So I decide to join. I filled out the basic info, no big deal, five minutes tops. Then next was a questionaire, which was fine. First page, ten questions about my personality. Finish up. Click 'next'. Next page. More questions about my personality. Cool. Next page... thirty more questions about my deeper personality. Hmmm. Ok... no prob...
Thirty five minutes later and I'm probably only a quarter of the way through this questionaire, but that's fine I tell myself, because waiting at the end of all this is going to be my match... probably a few... mmmm... I'll get to pick...
And finally I'm done and I hit submit and the little spinning disc at the bottom spins as I await the man/men of my dreams and after what seems like an eternity there is a message! Thrilled and excited (though quickly changing to disbelief) I read:
We're sorry but we are unable to match you with ANYONE in our
database at this time. We hope you will try again one day.
"WTF!"... I whispered... "the world's largest and most meaningful dating site just found me unmatchable... fuck my life..." and then because my sense of humor revels in self depreciation, I laughed my ass off. "Unmatchable, indeed."
While I would eventually find Mr. Right, it would happen much later, two years later to be precise, and the old fashioned way: no computers involved. There's probably even a lesson in there...
